The third-ranked Angelo State softball team more than lived up to its lofty spot in the NCAA Division II poll on Sunday.

Sophomore Carly Peters homered in each game of the series and the Rambelles needed just 10 innings on Sunday to pound out 35 hits — 13 for extra bases — in routing Eastern New Mexico University by scores of 24-1 and 11-3 at Zia Softball Field.

ENMU (6-16, 1-5 Lone Star Conference) made Saturday’s series opener competitive in losing 15-10, but the Zias were no match on Sunday for the Rambelles (22-3, 6-0), who had four innings of at least four runs in the first game and scored in all but two innings of the twin bill.

Angelo leads the all-time series with the Zias 36-6 and has won 21 in a row since ENMU posted an 8-5 win over the Rambelles in the 2006 season finale.

Peters went 4-for-6 with two walks in the twin bill, scoring six runs and driving in seven. She went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and four RBIs on Saturday, and doubled her season’s home run total in the three-game set.

Peters hit a run-scoring double in a seven-run first and a three-run homer in a seven-run fourth in the opener, and hit a three-run homer in the third inning of the nightcap. Senior DeeshanaLynn Tafiti went 3-for-3 with two walks and five RBIs in the opener, belting two-run homers in each of the first two innings — her 11th and 12th of the season — and adding an RBI double in the fifth before going 0-for-4 in the second game.

The Zias, who had a seven-run third in Saturday’s game, did all their scoring in the third inning on Sunday, scoring their only run in the opener on Melissa Reynosa’s RBI groundout to short and getting an RBI fielder’s choice from Katie Ramsay and run-scoring singles from Aurelia Sandoval and Amanda Lale in Game 2.

Mary Kate McKay (11-1) and Elsamartina Apo combined on a two-hitter in the opener, while the Zias got six hits off McKay and Claire Molina (12-2) in the second game.

The Zias return to action on Wednesday, hosting Adams State in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
